Winston rod notes from Tom Larimer

The new 6110-4 BIII TH is the smallest gun in the Winstonís new BIII TH Spey rod family. Itís incredibly light and responsive when lined with a 360 grain Airflo Rage Compact. That said it cast like a light six. By that I mean its super fun with a floating line. However, donít expect this stick to rip a Skagit head with 12í of T-14 and a big weighted fly. It will do sink-tips with a 420 Skagit Switch; just have reasonable expectations of what it can handle. The softer tip section on the 6110 should make it a fun streamer rod for big trout and smallmouth.

The new 6116 BIII TH is the perfect little spey rod for dry line summer steelhead. With a 390gr Airflo Rage Compact this thing was a cannon! More so, it has enough in the tank to cast fairly heavy sink-tips and weighted flies when paired with a 450 grain Airflo Skagit Switch. I can also see this being a wonderful rod for hucking sculpins and mice at big Alaskan rainbows.

THE BORON III TH series was designed with input from some of the finest spey casters in the world and successfully builds on Winstonís two-handed tradition of handcrafting perfectly balanced, responsive, high-performance rods. Built with advanced Boron III technology, this series is more powerful, more responsive, smoother casting and has faster recovery than the incredibly popular Boron IIx two-handed series it replaces. This rod is also lightweight and allows an angler to present a fly with incredible accuracy and cast long distances, with ease. The Boron III TH is the ideal selection for any style of two-handed angling and can easily transition between Touch-and-Go, Underhand and Sustained Anchor techniques. No matter if youíre fishing Traditional Spey, Skagit, Scandi or Switch lines, this series will meet the challenge. Offering extraordinary power, responsiveness and accuracy, the Boron III TH is perfectly balanced to enhance line delivery and minimize fatigue. This series has unquestionably set a new standard in the world of two-handed rods.
