Pete Field is a longtime presence on Oregon’s trout and steelhead rivers and the founder of Deschutes River Guides. Raised in Corvallis, Pete grew up near both summer and winter steelhead water, and that early exposure helped shape the way he fishes, teaches, and guides today.
While attending Oregon State University, Pete spent much of his time chasing steelhead. In 1988, he caught his first Deschutes steelhead on the fly, a moment that helped set the course for decades on the water. In 1998, he founded Deschutes River Guides and has been helping anglers experience Oregon rivers ever since.
Although Pete is best known for steelhead, his guide program also includes Deschutes redside trout and seasonal Oregon Coast winter steelhead. His approach is built around steady instruction, reading water, matching anglers to the right kind of water, and helping guests fish more effectively.

Lower Deschutes Summer Steelhead
Pete’s summer steelhead program centers on the lower Deschutes, where jet boat access from the mouth opens up classic runs on the lower river. Oregon Coast Winter Steelhead
When winter arrives, Pete shifts focus to Oregon Coast steelhead. He grew up fishing winter steelhead on the Alsea and Siletz, and his more recent winter program has focused around Astoria and nearby systems, including the Nestucca, Nehalem, and Tillamook-area rivers.
Winter trips are adapted to conditions and angler preference. Depending on water levels and the best available opportunity, that may mean swinging flies in smaller water or indicator fishing from a drift boat. Pete keeps the day flexible and focused on fishing the right water the right way.
