"10' vs 14'"

on 10/27/2018 9:45:21 AM

Review (Tell us Why?: I was using the 14'ers on a 12' rod. The 10'ers are a better fit for the shorter rods in my opinion.

"Great Tips"

on 3/7/2016 11:40:32 AM

Review (Tell us Why?: I have fished Airflo Polyleaders for years without any trouble. They are perfect for spey casting scandi lines. I read the other review and would like to address some of his concerns. First separation, I have seen this happen but it is so minor. nip off the loose material and go on. Polyleaders are nylon line coated with a poly material to build up mass. There has to be a transition point and that can come loose. Minor, trim it and go. Second Breaking, You got to treat the tippet end just like any other leader, retie when needed. Third if you are really fishing big fish consider going up a size to 40lb salmon. They are not listed here but when I called Gorge Fly Shop they were more than willing to acquire them for me from Airflo. They said they don't list because very few anglers need/want them. If more request come they will stock and list them. Difference is the salmon poly's are built on a 40lb core vs the steelhead 24lb core. Bottom line treat it like any leader and you'll be fine.

"Not Your Ordinary Review"

on 9/12/2014 3:39:03 PM

Review (Tell us Why?: I bought a NRX 7/8, Lamson Litespeed, and a line from Gorge sight unseen for a trip to the Tsiu River in AK, plus two of the Airflo floating leaders. We were there for four full days and two half days. In reading this review, bear in mind that this is a grueling trip for any gear. The salmon were larger than average this year, the hens were 10-14 and the bucks 13 to 16. The fish are right out of the ocean, bright and hot, and the river current is strong so the fight is never easy. I had issues with the leaders from the start and would probably not use them again. As for the first leader, I tried some practice casting before the trip and managed to lose the fly to a snag. I just kept on casting and this was a mistake because the coating on the leader began to separate from the core. I just used the leader that way on the river the first couple of days, with a 18.5# tippet blood knotted to the end. The coating tended to slide up on the core, giving the leader a very twisted appearance. The fish did not care. However, after about 50 fish the leader broke, having separated right at the loop. I put on the second leader, and without any flyless practice casting, the coating on that leader also slid up the core and caused the leader to take on a twisted appearance. After another 50 or so fish, the second leader also separated in exactly the same place as the first, right where the loop was spliced in, leaving the loop and an inch or so of coating dangling from my line. I then tied up a leader comprised of 40#, then 25# Maximan, and finally my 18.5 # tippet. It worked equally as well as the poly leader and without the breakage issue. Given two breaks at the loop splice, I would not trust these leaders on large fish.
