So what’s up with all this talk about tips and sink tips and polyleaders and so on? Well, it can be complicated but we can work through it. Let’s first start by going over the major difference between a tip and a poly/versileader.


Yes, it’s true, fly reels can be just as expensive as the actual fly rod in hand. Certain reels can go upwards of a thousand dollars or more, but this sort of dollar outlay is rather luxurious. A more frequent price range for fly reels is between $60 – $600. What determines this price? Well it really comes down to the quality of materials used, the design and the size of the reel.

Finding the right line for switch rods (rods between the lengths of 10.5 – 11.5 feet) can be confusing. Let us try to clear a few things up by talking about the different types of applications that switch rods are used for.

One of the biggest recommendations to newcomers is to head out with a buddy who has some experience with the sport. Also, if it is an option, hiring a fishing guide for a day is truly invaluable.
