Pete Field | Deschutes River Guides

Pete Field, Deschutes River Guides:

Growing up in Corvallis, Oregon was a great place to become a steelhead angler.  Winter and summer steelhead streams close by created my passion for steelhead fishing.  I went to Oregon State University, but in truth much of that time at Oregon State was spent fishing for steelhead.  In 1988 I got invited on a jet boat trip on the Deschutes and my first steelhead on the fly was swung up on the dry line and a wet fly (in a run that is still a favorite to this day).  In 1998 we started Deschutes River Guides.

Typical Fishing Trips that Deschutes River Guides offer:

Summer Steelhead:  July through November summer steelhead trips on the lower Deschutes start by jet boating up from the mouth to access the lower 24 miles of the river.  The Deschutes was made for swinging flies for steelhead, both on the dry line and with sink tips.  The river has long runs of the ideal water speed and depth for presenting flies to summer steelhead.

Deschutes Redside Trout:  Jetboat trout trips start in May and run thru mid-July.  Lower river trout are typically players as they do not see the volume of dry flies or stone fly nymphs as other sections of the river.  Deschutes Resides are some of the hardest fighting rainbow trout, the combination of their genetics and the current in the Deschutes can give them the advantage over the angler.

Winter Steelhead:  I grew up fishing winter steelhead on the Alsea and Siletz rivers.  My last few decades in Astoria have moved my winter steelhead focus to the Nestucca, Nehalem, and the Tillamook area rivers.  Winter steelhead trips can be indicator fishing from the driftboat or we can swing some small water runs.

I truly enjoy teaching steelhead fly fishing, especially spey casting and swinging flies for steelhead.  I also enjoy taking steelhead anglers to water that they feel comfortable fishing.  We can find a wide range of anglers the water that makes our day fun and safe, while still getting to fish good steelhead water well.
