Every now and then, we come across an artist whose work naturally fits Abel's palette of custom finishes. This time, that artist is Casey Underwood. Each of these original designs was created to correspond with a specific model in the Abel lineup. Individually laser engraved, and put through a proprietary polishing/texturizing process, these reels feature an innovative, first of its kind finish.

The right trout reel disappears in use, in the best way. It balances your rod, manages line cleanly, and gives you consistent drag control when a fish changes direction or surges at close range. The Abel TR 4/5 is designed for that everyday trout reality, while this edition adds a distinctive visual identity: Casey Underwood’s “Last Light” in Slate Gray.

The return of a classic. The new Abel TR stays true to the roots of the original, but with a striking modern design and feel. The partial porting of the frame draws from the Abel lineage, and its unique features are as inventive as anything Abel has ever produced.

Crafted by our expert machinists in Montrose, Colorado, the TR is a lightweight masterpiece. An integrated precision-balanced clicker on the spool eliminates the need for a counterweight, yielding a clean look and retaining an iconic click-pawl sound. The pronounced palming rim is deliberately shaped to manually control drag pressure in all fishing conditions. The TR also features a large-arbor spool engineered to reduce line memory and increase retrieval rate. Machined stainless steel accents on both the frame and spool add that extra level of detail found only in an Abel reel.

Specs - 

Q: Is this more of a “collectible” or a “daily driver”?
A: Both. The finish is special, but the reel is built to be fished. Many anglers buy these editions to use as their primary trout reel—while keeping the look they actually want on their rod.

Q: Will this work for small stream trout and bigger river trout?
A: Yes. On small water, it’s light and balanced; on bigger water, the drag control and retrieve help manage longer runs and quick direction changes.

Q: Can I switch retrieve direction (left-hand vs right-hand)?
A: Most modern trout reels can be configured either way, but the exact method can vary. If you tell us your preferred retrieve direction, we can help ensure it’s set up correctly before you fish it.
