Why Every Angler Needs a 5 Weight Fly Rod
The 5 weight fly rod is the cornerstone of most trout angler setups. They're good for a reason. It's incredibly versatile, perfect for everything from dry flies on small creeks to nymphing or casting light streamers on big rivers. Beyond trout, it's equally at home chasing bluegill, crappie, and small bass in warmwater conditions.
The trusty 5 weight! With few exceptions, most serious trout anglers owns at least one. Many own several. Fives are widely considered the do-everything rod weight in the trout world. Of course, there are some outlying situations but in general, a 5 weight is the core arrow in the quiver of most trout fishers. Beyond coldwater fisheries, 5 weights are perfect for any smaller warmwater species like bluegills, crappies and smaller bass. With so many applications of this particular rod weight, 5's can be found in a myriad of lengths and actions for a variety of fishing situations. Here are some general guidelines for selecting the best 5 weight for your intended uses.

Notes on Rod Action
For those that are not familiar, rod action is a general reference to how much the rod bends. Slower or softer-action rods bend more deeply down toward the butt section. Slower action rods are generally favored for surface or near-surface presentations and unweighted or lightly weighted flies. Conversely, faster or stiffer-action rods bend primarily toward the tip. Faster rods typically have more power and allow for performance casting using a variety of approaches, including the use of heavier flies.

The 9' 5wt is available in a range of actions, which refers to how the rod flexes during a cast:
Fast Action rods flex mostly at the tip and are ideal for longer casts, windy days, and heavier flies. They're crisp, efficient, and offer a lot of power but require some casting skill.
Moderate Action rods bend more through the middle and provide a smoother, more forgiving feel. These are often favored by newer anglers or those focusing on dry fly presentations.
Slow Action (or full flex) rods are less common in a 9' 5wt, but they shine in very specific conditions like small streams, short casts, or when using fine tippet and tiny flies.
5 Weight Lengths
* Shorter than 8'6" fly rods - Short 5 weights are the least common among the modern offerings. These rods tend to be softer action geared specifically toward dry fly fishing on smaller water. Many rods in these shorter lengths will be built out of slow action graphite, fiberglass or bamboo.
* 8'6" - Most rod manufacturers offer their flagship 5 weights in 8'6" and 9'. 8' 6" 5's tend to be a little stiffer than their corresponding 9' counterparts. This plays well with heavier, more powerful fly lines and weighted rigs.
* 9' - This is by far the most popular length. 9' 5 weights have enough reach to manage line on the water very efficiently. They come in every action imaginable for any fishing situation. Most anglers find a faster action (but not hyper fast) to offer the most flexibility with fly weight, size and the ability to combat wind. For most anglers, if you're going to own one trout rod to do it all, make it a 9' 5 weight.
* 9'6" - The sleeper size. 9'6" 5 weights have a ton of application on bigger water where line management is crucial. The additional 6" gives you enough extra reach to move great lengths of line when mending. This is also a popular length in the stillwater world for people fishing out of float tubes or other watercraft where the angler is sitting very low to the water.
* 10' - A favorite among stillwater anglers, 10' 5 weights offer the most reach when fishing out of a small watercraft. The extra length allows you to lift and cast long indicator rigs with ease. It also keeps your backcast elevated and helps prevent hitting the water behind you on longer casts. From a river fishing standpoint, 10 footers are an excellent tool for maximizing line control when indicator fishing.
