Staff Pick – Callum's Take
The combination of rod, MDC Scandi, and reel will tackle any summer steelhead in the lower 48. The Scandi Body and MDC tips allow you cover all depths. From full floater with skaters and wets, to running traditional wets lower in column in the mid day sun. Also allows you to stretch out the the summer season by swinging lower and slower, when steelies aren't willing to move up as much to take your fly.
What we like.
Rod - The 6130-4 R8 Spey is capable of producing high line speed without losing its touch and feel. Light swing weight makes casting this rod all day an easy, enjoyable experience. The Fore and rear grips are some of my favorites out there. The thin fore grip doesn't hinder the feel of the blank and the rear has great ergonomics.
Reel - Sage nailed the redesign of the spey series reels. The aesthetic is a nice blend of modern and classic design. They improved the drag by adding another gasket and a second check for improved sound While still keeping true to Sage, the One Revolution Drag Knob allows the anglers to quickly change the drag pressure in a moments notice. The rounded onset reel foot post is great addition.
MDC Scandi - Not only being an enjoyable line to cast but allows the angler to cover multiple depths and scenarios. The MDC tips promote fantastic turn over and make a more direct connection from tip to fly.
